Goodbye to lovely Slovenia

We’ve ABSOLUTELY loved Slovenia – a country wedged between Austria to the north, Italy to the west, Croatia to the east and south.  With half of its land covered in forest and only 2 million people to share it – it was our kind of country.  It gave up to us a wealth of wonderful plants and memories that we will cherish for a very long time.   Read More…

Vegetable patch Croatian style

We had our first rainy day today so decided to drive the short distance from where we’re staying in the National Park at Lokve to Krk Island where it was fine.

Over the the causeway by 7am and down to the bottom of the island for an early coffee at 8.  On top of the beautiful little village of St Baska we saw this gorgeous vege patch with an incredible view – straight out to sea, over the islands and back to the coast of Croatia.

Every possible space in the villages is used – mainly for vegetables and at this time of the year many are edged with flowering tulips.  The tulips are so strong over here, and the colourings beautiful.  Everyone who can grows potatoes, if they can grown nothing else, they always have potatoes.

In the countryside the larger patches have 3-4m poles around them. I initially thought these were for beans – but there weren’t any cross supports.  I’ve since seen a little painting in one of our b&bs of sunflowers surrounding a vege patch – so that must be what they’re for.  It’s too early yet for the sunflowers to have germinated, or be planted.  They must look wonderful late summer when in flower.  Drat, we will be well home and in the cold by then.

Spring is in the air

I’ve been rather remiss on the Blog front I’ve got to admit.   The vege patch has been completely neglected this winter.  As you know, we went to Spain and the last thing I did before leaving was to sow the Broad Bean seeds and I put most of the remainder of the garden into a green crop which the husband kindly dug in a few weeks ago.

The winter has been so miserable and overcast that the poor Broad Beans are only just starting to make pods!  They came up whilst we were away and the winter was dry so they remained very short – which has been a revelation in itself!  Normally by B.B.’s are over my head.   Read More…

Jimena de la Fronterra

We’ve had a very busy time since leaving the west coast and have been based about 45 minutes north of Gibraltar in the countryside as you can see above.

We have been out walking everyday and as I keep telling my mother – Te Mata Peak is going to be a Doddle when we get home. Read More…
