Lemon Globeflower – Trollius

One thing I never dreamt of seeing in drifts was Trollius europaeus.  When we saw our first one we were over the moon.  A little like when we saw our first woodland Anemone.  Car screeched to a halt.  No it wasn’t another huge dandelion, ( size of the dandelions over here – they’re impressive) it was a Trollius!

We have Trollius growing in our garden at home and each spring as they come into flower there are “oohs and ahs” about how clear the lemon colouring is and how gorgeous they are – all three of them!

To see meadows of Trollius was a sight and then to find that growing underneath was a perfect planting combination – Alchemilla (Ladies Mantle) the alpine variety and amongst all this blue Geraniuns just emerging and in flower – soft yellow ground orchids.  What a picture it must be in a few weeks time when they are all fully in bloom

The Trollius we have seen have all been growing between 1300-1800m asl in heavy soil that is constantly damp.  Ours at home grow in heavy soil, at 100m asl and are perfectly happy.
