Noted as being Europe’s oldest arboretum this place was on my “must see” list from the very beginning And as its sited just 15 or so kms north of Dubrovnik on the main road it was an easy visit to incorporate. Of course we were the first there at 8am and wandered through the unmanned gates and into a slight wilderness of trees and shrubs. The guy was obviously a mad collector!
Started by the Gozze family in the late 15th century – they put the word out to ship captains to bring back seeds and plants from all around the world. There’s not a precise date but the aqueduct that is still in use today was there in 1492!
