Firstly, my apologies for the orientation of the picture, but as you can imagine – there’s no way a 500 year old plane tree is going to fit into a rectangular slot the right way up!

Although Trsteno qas extensively damaged in the Homeland War of the early 1990’s when it suffered gun boat attacks and was set alight the two magnificent Oriental Plane trees at the entrance survived.

Five such trees were originally planted in the central market place of Trsteno and to the locals credit these two magnificent specimens still survive And are now 60m tall with trunks 5m in diameter!

The whole setting of Trsteno is amazing and well worth an hours stop on your way north from Dubrovnik.
